Fantasy v. Reality
Many individuals often forget that pornography is in fact, just acting that is displaying obscene and intimate material. Since many people do not realize that it is indeed theatrical, this causes peoples expectations to sway. People's fantasies than take over and they are disappointed when it doesn't quite match up with reality.
HOW ARE MEN PORTRAYED IN PORN?
Men are typically the most tied to pornography. Men in pornography typically reinforces the idea of supremacy. Men in pornography are depicted as superior individuals while women are seen as passive objects. Pornography tends to portray men's sexuality on the basis of cruelty, coercion, and degradation. Men want to be portrayed as powerful and strong, so pornography often portrays them as a master to the submissive women. Women's bodies are just seen as vessels for the men to satisfy their needs and urges. When men see other men in pornography being depicted as the master, this leads to men then incorporating those same mannerisms into their own sex lives. Once men see that is not the same when compared to pornography, this leads to disappointment and possible an addiction to porn in order to get the same satisfaction and feelings. An example below is a trailer from the film Don Jon (2013) that expresses how men who become dependent on porn for their sexual needs are unable to understand how real sexual intercourse is so different.
AND WOMEN?
Women are often portrayed as the opposite of men. Women are typically depicted as gold diggers, an insatiable sex-crazed individual, an individual who craves pain, and a controllable, submissive playmate. Women in pornography are often portrayed as desiring any man that is nearby and are allowed to do whatever they want to them. Women's bodies are often seen as disgusting and referred to as many names such as "bitch, cunt, and fuck toy". Pornography causes confusion within women with their own bodies and eradicates women's sexual agency.
